Commander 950 with BAD Injectors??
Commander 950 with BAD Injectors??
I have been away from this board for some time, I haven't had the time or need to work on my car lately, until now. Once again the spector or emmissions testing is upon me. I'll give a quick synopsis. I built my engine in 2002, a roller cam 383 with afr heads. It took some doing but i managed to tune it to pass emmissions with the electronic quadrajet. It actually passed pretty easily. The following summer i installed the HSR and c950 kit with 30lb injectors. Since that time i haven't been able to get the car to idle well. It also would not pass emmissions, and idle vacum seemed quite low. The motor has a shake to it like a missfire but its better sometimes and then gets worse. I went through everything in a effort to find the problem. I have been chasing it for several years now. The only other thing i changed when i installed the HSR kit was the large cap HEI. I replaced it with a NEW gm small cap unit and crane external coil. This spring i decided to try an ignition upgrade since that seemed to be the only other part that changed. I bought a Jacobs pro street kit. It was a good investment as the car runs better overall but i still have my idle problem.
That brings me to this past saturday, I brough the car into my friends shop. When i changed the ignition i regapped the plugs and started thinking about the HORRIBLE mixture distribution that they showed. In recent weeks the car hasn't been driven much but has idled quite a bit. The plugs were showing so lean in the 1/2 cylinders that they seemed like they haven't been run. The 7/8 cylinders looked some what rich and the middle 4 seemed about right. In the past i did a compression and leakdown test on each cylinder and everything was within 10% (less if memory serves). What perplexed us on several occasions was that disconnecting one cylinder at a time cause the shake to worsen INTERMITTENTLY. We could not nail down which cylinder was the culprit. After seeing the mixture problem we decided to look at the injectors closely, checking the flow between each over time with an injector tester. The first tests showed no difference. We have 42 psi of pressure. Then i started using smaller pulses to test with and i found something revealing. Using 3.5ms pulses with 42 psi of fuel pressure most injectors didn't actually open most of the time. you could hear the injector trying to move but there was no fuel pressure drop. Using a 10ms pulse most did fire. Once the pressure was down to 38 psi or less all the injectors fired all the time with 3.5 ms pulses. With the engine running we bled pressure off the rail and the idle smoother out tremendously, idle vacume came up too. as soon as the pressure was allowed to increase the idle went rough again. The wide band O2 indicated 14-14.7:1 during idle. There exhaust odor was also less noticable. Very curious at this point we took some used injectors and pressurized them with solvent in 5psi steps to see where they would stop firing with 3.5 ms pulses. they all failed around 65-70 psi. So my conclusion at this point is that the injectors i recieved with my kit were/ are faulty. My friend who owns the shop says he sees thsi on occasion but normally its only 1 bad injector, he then replaces the bad one. I would like to know if anybody else has had this problem? Are there any known issues with Holley injectors? Is there any chance of Holley replacing these units?? I have 30 lb injectors i understand that ford makes a 30 lb unit but i don't know what part number to look for, is there a name for this style of unit? If anybody has any suggestions i would like to hear them. Right now i'm very happy but also very frustrated!!
