What's up with the Tech 2?

What does the Tech 2 do for thousands of dollars that these other scanners don't for less than $1k? I don't get it, don't they all read the same information?

Re: What's up with the Tech 2?

the tech2 is the factory GM scan tool.
as far as the ECM systems used in the thirdgens, its really no better than most of the other scan tools out there.
the factory scanners really start showing their colors on the new OBD2 systems.
as far as a good scan tool for a thirdgen goes, TunerPro is great, a laptop, cable & TunerPro works better than any store bought scanner.

Re: What's up with the Tech 2?

The Tech 2 is bidirectional, meaning that it can communicate with the ECM rather than just read it. Using the tech 2 you can command various components (EGR, EVAP, flash PROM programming) and see if the system is working properly. The Tech 2 is an OBDII reader and would not be used on vehicles made prior to 1996.

Ah ok. Is it worthwhile to have one for your thirdgen? If so, what's a popular model? I like toys.

unless you have some other GM cars or trucks that are OBD2, its not worth it.

if you like toys, adding some flash chips & a chip burner to a laptop with TunerPro & an ALDL cable is a great set of toys. then you could start learning how to burn your own chips for that thirdgen
