evil (?) error codes
evil (?) error codes
Hi
This question has probably been asked a million times before but please bear with me... How do you get the error codes from the ecm? I am working on an 84 camaro h/o 4 barrel 5 speed and the check engine light is on. I have thoroughly read this article ( https://www.thirdgen.org/service-eng...ht-error-codes ) and the specific part I don't understand is how to translate the blink patterns into numbers. Does the computer blink the number out in binary code or something? I don't understand. How do you know which blink pattern refers to which error number? I'm having a lot of trouble with this...I have never owned a car made after 1972...
The car is running pretty bad and is getting terrible gas mileage. The engine has just gone through a costly rebuild and at the moment it seems to have all been in vain... Everything has been gone over in detail with no improvement. Everything besides the computer that could cause this problem has been tested or is brand new. I have invested months in rebuilding this car. The car has been brought to four highly recommended mechanics but they have been unable to make any improvment...but enough of my sob story... Thanks for any help you guys can shoot my way...

Re: evil (?) error codes
Not sure if my 1984 FI Vette is the same? concept most likely is. For instance : 5 flashes- pause- 5 more flash is ECU. 4 flash pause 4 more is Lean. I see 22 codes in Haynes manual. If you have a ALDL connection I suspect an auto parts store can scan for free.
Re: evil (?) error codes
After sitting down and thinking about the problem I figured it out. The first set of blinks is a tens place of the code number and the second set of blinks is the ones place of the code number. Therefore "blink space blink blink blink blink blink" is code 15, which means there is a problem with the computer's temp sensor. Turns out the brand new temp sensor that had been bought for the car was not continuous at all between its two terminals. Luckily we keep all parts when we work on a car so we just unscrewed the sensor and screwed in the old one and...problem fixed! The car still isn't running at its very full potential but it is doing much much better now that this problem has been overcome.
