Hi All,

I recently bought an 87 IROC with a 305 TPI.

It's my first F-body and after reviewing the boards and internet articles about suggested modifications, I am curious about upgrading the stock ignition system.

The problem I am having is that I don't what parts need to be purchased for my car. I know the wires, distributor and coil are necessary, but is there anything else?

Additionally, I see 'boxes', like the MSD 6AL. It appears that it is a necessary addition, but I don't know anything about it, so I'm hoping I can be educated on it here.

Lastly, anyone know of a source to buy all of these parts as a kit to save money?

If it's helpful for you to know, I want this car to be in the 'street performance' category. It will not be track raced.

I would simply start with a good tune-up, its very unlikely you would see any performance benefit from a msd system on an otherwise stock car. If you do plan on a lot of mods in the future it may be a good investment but there are better hp per dollar mods. If it has a factory exhaust system you'd be silly not to start there

 

After doing more research and based on using the car as a 'street performer' only, I think I'll just go with wires and a coil. I'm open to suggestions for brands.
