How to check codes

This may be a dumb question, but I'm going to ask. I have a 91 Z28 5.0 TPI and was wondering how I go about pulling the codes from the computer. I know they're suppose to flash on the gauge cluster, but how do I go about getting them to appear. My problem is that my car is stuttering while I'm driving. Not sure if its fuel related or timing or something else. Any help would be appreciated.
