ARRGHHH...Smog Referee doesn't recognize my ECM

I'm hoping someone here has a GM Crossreference manual or something similar. The smog referee failed my TPI motor swap because, among other things, his manual does not crossreference the 16198259 ECM as a replacement to the 1227165 ECM specifically in cars with VIN code "8" (L98 F-bodies). So I need to present to him a scan from an official GM manual that will crossreference the newer ECM for the older one on thirdgens. If anyone here has a GM guide and they can scan that page for me, I'll be more than happy to buy them a beer or two (provided I pick the bar!). My car's getting prepped for an upcoming show this week so I'm on a time crunch. Thanks.

Man that sucks, hope you find what your looking for. Did they run it on the emissions dyno? I'd bet it probably ran cleaner then the old carbed engine your replaced..That's crazy that the facists out there are that **** about things, here they'd just run it on the dyno and if it ran clean enough you'd be on your way. I really doubt they'd even know a tpi engine wasn't factory for 84 unless you told em in NJ.

Re: ARRGHHH...Smog Referee doesn't recognize my ECM

Actually it failed pretty badly because Painless Wiring gave us sh*tty instructions on how to wire up the park/neutral/safety switch that they sold us, so It wouldn't even go into closed loop operation when they'd shift into drive. So now we gotta go back and get on the phone with them. How they chose the name 'Painless' is beyond me.

But yeah, someone here's has got to have a manual with the ECM numbers.

Found this, although it won't do anything for a referee. But maybe the poster has more information to back it up?

Thought about asking a Chevy stealership for documentation, showing it is a replacement ECM?

Yeah I found plenty of threads about the two ECMs but I don't think that would cut it. Chevy thunder has a diagram that works for both again it's not "legit"

Here's a crossreference online but again, no GM endorsement.

Yes, I think you'll have to find a knowledgeable dealership to help you.

Mark Christopher Chevrolet in Ontario, CA
Scoggin Dickey in Lubbock, TX
Pace Performance in Niles, OH
Gilbert Chevrolet in Milton-Freewater, OR
Burt Chevrolet in Englewood, CO

Those are some good ones I know about.

Re: ARRGHHH...Smog Referee doesn't recognize my ECM

the real problem with painless is that they dont normally wire for smog equipment. when they do its after wiring and not always correct. your smog equipment may not even be working. i had mine checked when i got it from a buyer - it was a complete tpi including brain box.
what are you doing infront of a referee anyway?
i will look to see if i have the manuals for that but i dont think so.
