MAF or speed density?

Hey guys,
I'm swapping a tpi onto my 68 chevelle. The motor is a destroked 400(377). I can't remember what cam I originally put in the motor, but it's a fairly lumpy. I put the motor together at least 10 years ago and the c ar has been sitting. The problem I'm faced with is running SD or MAF. I'm told that Maf is a little more forgiving with mods. SD will work, I just need a custom prom. Which system is better in the long run? How much cam can you run with either system. I have a SD computer already (7730) but am wondering if I should go MAF because the engine is far from stock. Opinions please! Thanks

You're going to need a custom PROM either way, the motor is already far enough from stock that a MAF PROM won't work. Well, it would probably run, but it wouldn't be optimal. One other thing to consider too is that the intake ductwork for SD is a little easier to fab, since you don't need a MAF sensor anywhere in it.

If it were me, I'd go with SD - after the various troubles and headaches I've had related to the MAF computer, I'm even considering upgrading my MAF car to SD. And at least in my area, SD ECM's are easier to find, since they came in many other cars.

Re: MAF or speed density?

Thanks for the quick response. Well,I have a SD comp already. And yes it would be easier to plumb in the engine bay, I just don't know anyone in Fl who can burn a custom prom for me. I was told that Maf would adjust to engine mods up to a point. I've also been told I can run a LS style pcm to run my tpi setup and just turn off everything I'm not going to use.Hmmmm, decisions!
