Custom Muscle Car ECU Questions
Custom Muscle Car ECU Questions
Hello,
I have a custom 72 El Camino 4x4, supposedly it is powered by a crate 350 with intake and other top end parts from a 90 IROC, controlled by a 90 Corvette ECU... This is what I was told when I purchased it, at least. I really have no idea and not enough knowledge to be able to see if that is correct or not.
It ran for a while, but the guy who assembled (read: Hacked) everything together didn't mount the ECU very well, and it moved around, and one of the little clips that holds the harness to the ECU was broken off, so every time you'd hit a bump, the motor would run very poorly and would sometimes die.
I remedied this with some zip ties, and it worked for a while. It still ran unpredictibly, however, and eventually it just wouldn't start anymore - (due to rotten fuel lines, we later learned) - draining the battery and requiring a jump....which we later heard "Oh don't jump start a car with a computer cuz you'll fry the computer!" Well, after we replaced the leaking, corroded, SMASHED COMPLETELY FLAT fuel lines, and charged the battery out of the car, it still won't start. Nothing, Nada, No How.
The ECU looks like it was a reman, it says "Number 7-7165" and "DC Code 1104GD" on it. The only other number I can find is what I assume is the serial number, as it has a barcode and is on top of the harness sockets.
So, my questions are, what vehicle was the computer intended for? Is it possible that we killed the ECU when we jumped it? Is there any way to test the computer out of the vehicle? (As we're currently tearing it apart down to the frame and restoring everything on the car) And if I wanted to just order a new one, where would be a good place to go? If someone can give me the application for the original ECU, that would help immensely.
Thanks everyone for your time, and I hope everyone is having a safe 4th of July!
Brian

Re: Custom Muscle Car ECU Questions
"7-7165" indicates that it was from a 86-89 F-body or vette(a 1227165 ECM)... there are others that used the same ECM, but that's the most likely vehicle it came from...
i assume it has a MAF sensor? the TPI 90-92 vette ECM(1227727) and F-body ECM(1227730) doesn't use a MAF.
and correctly jumping cars will NOT kill an ECM... i've jumped computer controlled vehicles from ~1980something to ~2006 vehicles... never an issue, unless something was done horribly wrong.

Is there a way to test the computer out of the car to see if it works or if its dead? I'm wondering if possibly the wiring harness clip being broken may have allowed the plug to wiggle in the socket and fry it. Is that a possibility?
Thanks!
Re: Custom Muscle Car ECU Questions
My harness was loose once. all that happenned was an intermittant CE light and poor runnin engine. I also has loose eprom in socket(ZIF). same result. No damage.
I believe a faulty ECU throws a code. Faulty prom is a quicky flashing CE and faulty ECU is a solid CE. All is well when you get ign on engine off blink-solid on CE.
