I would use the MAX 233 for any kind of RS-232 communications. It has the chargepump caps built in, so external caps are not neccessary.

What are you doing???
My Maxim databook shows a number of different chips that do what the max232 does. There are 26 different flavors of the basic max232.

Looking at figures 5 and 11 of the maxim pdf, you would have to make substantial changes to use the max233 to replace the max232, but you do eliminate 3 caps.
To make the swap: you would eliminate the caps between pins 1 & 3, 4 & 5, and the cap at pin 6.
Then swap the following pins: (232=>233).
16 => 7
15 => 6 & 9
14 => 5
13 => 4
12 => 3
11 => 2
On the 233, tie pins 11 & 12 together, pins 16 & 10 together, and pins 12 & 17 together.
That's it...
