tryed to test my obd1 for codes and my fans come on

i.have a 86 iroc z28 and I have a misfire in my engine I got plugs and that comming but I decided to test the computer for any codes
bought a little gadget on ammazon and pluged it in
instead of a code it turns in my radiator fan it's electronic not mechanical and I get no codes i checked to see if the bulb under the dash was good and it is
tryed the paper clip trick same results

I'm honestly confused at this
it's not a problem right now but down the road I'd like to be able to use the computer for diagnostic purposes any help whould be appreciated

I'll look into it it's more of a thing I want to fix before it becomes a problem but it's not priority at the moment I'm neck deep in a 83 celica supra manual transmission swap rn

I'll post a update when I can tinker on the iroc again it may be up to a wheek though
