Scanner or laptop?

first off what is better to use to gather info? laptop or a scanner?

also I went out today witha scanner and got some interesting info. the max my TPS voltage would go to is 4.34v which from what I read is right. but it wouldn't go into "open" loop. I also have my tranny kickdown cable all the way out to get to that 4.34v any other way and it wouldn't get above 4v. what do I need to adjust to get my engine to go into PE? thanks

A laptop is better cause you can gather and store everything on spreadsheets.
The tech articles section has some good info on adjusting TPS, IAC, TV cable, etc...

The ECM goes into PE mode based on a percent change in TPS voltage, not necessarily going above a certain TPS voltage level.
To change this requires going into the PE tables and changing things there.

My PE setting are still the original settings at:
400rpm - 50% TPS
1200rpm - 50% TPS
2000rpm - 50% TPS
3200rpm - 60.2 % TPS
4800rpm - 70.3% TPS
Maybe I confused you with my wording in the previous post, but it is a % of TPS at a certain rpm that enables PE mode.

so if my TPS voltage is at 4.34 and it doesn't kick into PE what is my problem? could it be the TPS? like going down the highway at 65 (2000rpm) and then putting it to the floor(4.34v) it downshifts but doesn't go into PE(open loop) thanks

Well if the ECM is seeing 4.34v from the TPS, that is enough to put it into PE mode, provided the '87 TPI is programmed similar to my '92 TPI, I believe yours is a MAF instead of SD, but it should work the same I'd think. Sometimes they can be picky and its usually recommended that the TPS voltage be above 4.5v at WOT, you may want to adjust the TPS sensor so that it sees > 4.5 at WOT by loosening the bottom screw and kicking the bottom part out toward the front while the top remains in the current position.
If you can;t get 4.5v, then you may want to try another TPS sensor. Don;t know what else would keep it from going into PE if thats not it.
Anybody else have any ideas?
