Using computer for diagnositics

I know this has probably come up before but I'm not in this forum a lot and I'm not exactly sure how to search (successfully) for it, and I think you guys will know exactly what I need to do. If you think I should have searched more and dont want to respond, but know where the answer is, please point me to it. Thanks. Here's the question:

I've got a 92 TPI 350 and a good laptop. I want to be able to read all the data from the ALDL but am not willing to pay however much for an Auto X-ray, I just dont have that kind of money. Is there free to reasonably priced program and some sort of cable I can hook up to my ALDL to read the data and have it displayed using the program on my laptop a la Fast and Furious?

Like I said, I'm sure this comes up often, please just point me to the answers. Thanks.

yep, You could also check on ebay. There is someone on there that is selling one for $40. You can do a search on "ALDL" also.

That should work fine. I got crafty and made my cable for $10 and works with the 7730 sd computer.

Ok you have to understand that I dont know all the different numbers for which year has which ecm, etcetera - will the cable on ebay work with my '92 350 TPI speed density camaro? I'd build my own but i dont understand a lick of that stuff. Thanks though.

The Speed Density TPI F-Body from 90-92 used the 1227730. The 86-89 MAF system used the 1227165. The TBI used the 1228746 from 89-92, and the 1228063 in 88.

You should have the 1227730, which from what I can tell is one of the best out there!

I JUST found this link that lists out the different year camaro's and the enignes and ECM's that are used. The only thing not there that would be useful is the TTA. You have to go all the way to the bottom of the page to get what I'm talking about. Hope this is helpful to someone!

Try here http://moates.net/gmecm/software.html Craig's software is about the best freebie there is (and better than most pay for programs too). Also make note of the schematics for the cables to use, try the simple 2 transistor one.
