Use PC Motherboard to read PROM

Would it be possible to dump a custom PROM (no identification) from an 86 7165 ECM using a PC motherboard with a dip socket to read teh PROM?

I know this was possible for reading and writing homebrew eproms for xbox, and I was wondering if it's possible, so as not to buy an eprom reader/writer

It might be possible to, assuming it uses a similar chip, open up the bios editing utility and then swap the chip. I woulnt mess with it, though. Ive messed those chips up before and its monumentally dificult to reload a working image after the chip gets scrambled.

I have a spare hypertech chip laying around that I will play with. Also, tons of motherboards so it doesn't matter if something gets messed up.

Anyone have experience using UniFlash to read GM PROMs on a motherboard? (Pretty universal flashing/reader program)
