I am trying to make my first cable and I am not real good at reading diagrams. On the 10k resistors, for the data, is the anode end closest to the serial port on the laptop or the ALDL connection in the car? Also, on the 12v connection, is the anode end closest to the cig lighter adapter or the transistor?

Resistors are not polarized, they don't have an anode or cathode.

Which diagram are you using? Maybe you're talking about a diode?

 

Your right, I got the two mixed up. I am using the diagrams that are on these boards. I just cant get my cable to work and I thought I had the resistors backwards, but as you said , it does not matter which way they are so it must be something else.
