1989 firebird -- what's it got

Hi all.

My 17 year old son just bought a 1989 firebird with 305 tbi engine. It smokes (most likely valve seals), but other than that it seems to run quite nicely for a car with 160,000 miles on it.

My question: what computer did they put in it? I've been fooling around with a 1227747 system in my 1973 corvette for a couple years now, and am wondering how similar his system is to the 7747.

Thanks,

John.

The 747 is a truck version TBI. If I'm not mistaken it plugs right in.
The car versions additonally, use a MAT.

BTW, that means you'll need two Speedreaders

Grumpy, I've been watching the speedreader discussion with great anticipation.

I haven't done anything with my car for quite a while now, it's been on blocks for a few months. I am swapping in a 700R4 transmission that I rebuilt last winter (I know, I know, but my knees bother me quite a bit with the stiff corvette clutch).

The last time I did anything with my vette, tunercat RT had just come out and I was using it. I suspect that the "state of the art" on this forum has advanced quite a bit since then. As soon as I get it on the road again, I'm going to have to do some serious studying.

I think my next project will be rack and pinion steering . . . . .

Both of mine have been scope'd so I had to swap to autos years ago.

If you really like being in more control of the tranny the *E* series are a ball to tinker with and program. The 4L8E in my truck is about as nice as nice can be. All the shift firmnesses, and shift points vs TPS are adjustable.

Your son's car has a 8746, it's the $61 code used by all F-body 305 TBI's from 89-92. It's similar to the 7747. If it's an autu it's probably the ANTT bcc .
