8746 questions?!?

First off this makes my head hurt!!!

ok I have problems turning my computer off, low teck speed junky stuck in there early 70's.

After reading hours of posts and too many beers I now know I'm just alittle bit more lost than when I started.

I have a pocket programmer 2 floating around and need to make a chip for my TBI motor I'm putting together. What scaner soft wear would be best for TBI? I also have access to OTC II scaners( AKA MAC MENTOR) editors? what will work best with the 8746?
what other wonder products out there might lend me a hand?
Where can I find a safe bin for a 91 305 lo3 tbi 5-speed? Can I swap in say fuel and timing tables from a vette crossfire 5 speed to get closer to my goals, or at lest let me see what does what? if so where can I find a bin for the vette? Where can I get chips to burn at? all the local places said they could not get them any more and one place just happen to lose my chip after they said they needed to see it

thanks for any help you might be able to give me

If you have a ppII already then all you need is an adaptor and a few extra chips from moates.net . Get his adaptor for the c3 TBI cars (2732 --> 29c256). Then grab a couple extra 29c256 chips for backups.
If you've got a scanner that's a good start. Read up the how to tune articles and you'll get a better understanding on what to change when. Example; BLMs are all above 128 then you know the computer thinks (from feedback from the oxygen sensor) that your VE maps (fuel maps) are too lean and is having to add fuel (blm stands for block learn multiplier). That's just an example, the tuning articles will go into it a bit more and try and explain things a few different ways.
I guess there are more people working with the 8746 than before so I should probably make a nice website explaining how to tune with it. The 8746 is similar to the 7747 in code and the 7747 has been used on MANY of the early TBI vettes.

winALDL is the best freeware stand alone package around for scanning. Runs on just about any laptop, so even an old piece of crap will work so long as it can run windows. Search for the user 'JoBy' here at TGO. He has a link to it in his sig. Requires some minor soldering to make a cable but other then that its free and not too hard to use.

Id start with a stock 305 bin similar to what you had. With the timing Ive found that putting a similar curve to what youd find with an old vac advance dist. works well to get the car going for starters. Basically plug in whatever youd run at idle, cruise with vacuum, and low and high rpm WOT, and use your mousing skillz and the graphing feature to blend and smooth the timing table. Also zero out the slope SA so the computer wont keep adding timing in on top of what you already have. After that you can at least start closing the fueling in before you make futher changes to the timing.
