parallel cable?

Has anyone had any success using a db 25 cable instead of a serial db 9?
Is this an alternative to people without serial connectivity on their laptops?

Parallel and serial are two different things. Dont think there is a way to utilize the parallel port for this. If your laptop has a usb you can use that with an adapter. I imagine it must have some form of a serial communications on it. Even my tandy with an LCD dot matrix display and DD 3.5" floppy drive had a serial port.

no, a DB25 will not work with parallel port. They have different methods of communicating. Serial data is transmitted sequentially 01010110101 - one bit at a time, and a parallel port is bi-directional and relies on two way communication.

If your laptop has PCMCIA Slots sometime called PC Card slots -- you can pick up an RS232 adapter for less than 50 bucks.

Are these the slots that take wireless cards, for example?

yep, thats them. On 'most' latptops I've seen they were on the right hand side of the case -- and each slot, usually 2 stacked one on top of the other, has a spring loaded ejector.
