need help finding diagnostic software!!

I just bought the cable from AKM and tried to use the software listed on the website and it wouldnt work. It would start but it would never read actual data from the ecm. Does anyone know of any free software that I can download???? My car is an 89 5.7.

Try this one. Let me know if it works, Traxton give me this info.

ftp://ftp.diy-efi.org/incoming/

Once you get there it will be called...
'carchat1_1.zip'

Please give me some feedback if it works. I have not tryed it yet. I have not had time to build my convertor/cable yet. Good luck!

Try this: http://members.home.com/craigmoates/gmecm/
Download the e6b001.zip. Run it from DOS. Read through it a bit. It will work. Works for me real good on the MAF car.

BTW, I like your car's profile, looks very hot!

Craig, I tried to use your software but it wont link up. In your instructions it says to put a 10 ohm resistor in between a and b??
I have a AKM cable... do I still need to do this??? All that happens is that it tries to keep syncing up but it wont.

There does need to be a 10K-ohm resistor between A and B in order to establish communication, but it can be removed once you start getting data. I'm not sure if Andrew has it integrated into his design or not. I'm guessing he might.

Also, I personally have to supply +5v to one of the comm-port pins to get it to work, but other people tell me it works fine without that mod.

Usually, you will see a flickering '00' and 'FC' as the last byte read while you're on the opening screen. Then you keep hitting '1' repeatedly with 10kohms (10,000) across A-B, and after maybe a dozen '1' attempts, it will beep. This indicates that it is linked up. They you hit '2', and you're in. You should then be able to remove the 'A-B' resistor and go off to the races. If you don't see the '00'-'FC' values and something else instead, let me know. It could be indicative of something else.

I really need to check with Andrew on the details of his design with respect to the 'A-B' diagnostic mode.

Also, are you using a custom PROM? If so, what type & speed? If you are linking up, getting data, seeing 'Check Engine' flicker, and then losing communication, let me know.

I do have a custom Prom so maybe that has something to do with it. I think that I might just head over to Radio Shack and get a 10 ohm resistor and try it that way. And I do see FC and 00 flicking if that helps at all. When you find out about the cable and if it really does need a resistor let me know. I think that I might try another program that was recommended also but I will keep you informed. And the data stream shown (FC,00,,,) constantly changes, often showing the same data.

Mike,
Everything turn out OK? I'd really appreciate any feedback on the program from anyone who tries it, particularly with respect to improvements and problems. Have fun!

Craig I do have a question for you. How do you save the data to disk and then how do you read it back???

You can save it by pressing 'L' or 'l' to toggle on/off the data logging, and once you exit the program, you can pull up the file (specified at program startup) as a '.csv' format. Excel or any other spreadsheet program is ideal for this.

Once you pull it into the spreadsheet, you can plot anything you want, like Speed & RPM -vs- time, MAF -vs- RPM, Advance -vs- RPM, Knock Counts -vs- Time, whatever.

On the logging, most of the critical data (summary page) is logged in the brief mode. The other mode is mostly for diagnostic purposes. Let me know what you don't like and I can work it out in the form of improvements and modifications.

I think one improvement would be a program that runs off of windows instead of all this DOS bot disk stuff.

don't hate, my

Sheesh, talk about bringing a post back from the dead.

Yup, there's been a little bit of progress the last 5 years.
