Using Tuner Cat Software

Tell me to go elsewhere if I'm out of line, here, but...

I downloaded the tuner and tried to open the file read from my chip, but it told me I needed an ECM definition file. I thought I downloaded one, but it still wouldn't work. In the "help" it told me I had to purchase one for $19.95. It also said I had to register the software for another $69.95.

What is the purpose of offering a free demo program if I can't do anything with it? I just want to be able to read my chip and see what's involved in changing a couple of the parameters. I have no problem with paying once I know I can do something with it, but I can't even get to first base with this thing. Am I doing something wrong?

The demo only has the tdf for the $42 (7747) ecm. That's the early '90s truck ecm. You can go to here ftp://ftp.diy-efi.org/pub/gmecm/bins/ and grab a bin from the 7747 and see general way TunerCat works.

Unfortunately, they don't give your choice of TDF files on the demo, but they do if you purchace it. You just specify the TDF file you want in when you purchase it and they give you your first choice free. You end up with 2 TDFS the, the one you requested when you purchase TunerCat plus the 42.TDF. They don't charge you for the first one.

You don't mention the car/engine that you have, so I cannot tell you the TDF file that you need or if that TDF is very good for that ecm. For my car, an SD TPI (730 ecm - 8D.TDF) if is very good. But you should ask what others are using and if they feel TunerCat is good for that one.

On a positive note, TunerCat is very good with updates, so as more information becomes known to them (they are always open to new ideas), they will give you the updates for free. You just have to download the latest version of TunerCat and it will automatically load the newest version and you don't have to re-register. For the TDF file, you just send them an e-mail and they will get it to you with 1 day.

Thanks, Glen. I accidently left my sig off, from which you can tell what I've got. I need a $32B. I'll go with your suggestion and play with that other one, for now. It looks like I'll have to cough up $20 to look at what's on my chip, though.
