Craig Moates: little help, please?

Hey, Craig. Played with your software this weekend in the Random number generation mode to see how/if it works. Seems pretty cool...

Now to the good stuff:

Trying to get your software to work on the 7747 TBI ECU. I have a hack of the 7747 but not of the ECU's that you support in your program now. I think I need the hack of your supported ECu to continue my work. I have some questions, like:

Q) Does your program just "read" the data output as it is streamed, in order, reach the last data point and start all over at the top?

Q) I am assuming it does and that I need to reet your program to the output scheme that the 7747 uses, along with the appropriate "headings", calcs for the data and actual number of "things" in the data stream, right? as you did in the arrays from like (64) to (85) or something like that.

I believe if I had the correct hack, I could answer the questions myself as the 7747 hack is probably very different.

Q) Any hack(s) I should look at to help me decipher your program? Addresses for the hack downloads? Thx.

Looks like a nice program, BTW. Can't wait to see a data file!!!!!!!!!!! Like to get it working for this weekend, but doubtful.

Read over the source code for the program and get a feel for it. If you have some more questions at that point, let me know and we can chat.

The way it's set up right now, it has setups for the 165 and 730, which are slightly different. Through inspection, it should be clear how to extend the present strategy to another ECM given the data structure and data request requirements.

I already read your program and understand it pretty well, I believe.

What I need to know is I think I need to have the correct number of "parameters" set up that are in the data stream, ie the number of parameters set up in your program to be read has to equal the number of outputs by the ECU in the data stream, correct? And then the data stream starts all over at he beginning, right? in other words, if the 7747 has 16 outputs and your software is setup for say 24, I must remove 8 of them to get the exact match of 16 outputed parameters. that has to be the case, i guess and I sound stupid even to myelf.

Any hack addresses so that I can compare/contrast the outputs of the ECU's? Sorry to ask s much but what is obvious to you about programming stuff is probably not to me. Thx

EDIT: You like spicy food??? I love it. Tabasco regular and their Habanero version in the fridge at all times!!! Just saw where you are from, that's all. YUM!

Yeah, the food here is pretty good. Don't like Tabasco though. Liked Jalapenos & what-not when I was living in Houston. Loved the seafood when I lived in Florida. Cultural diversity here now is pretty hurting.

Try a couple of these links:
http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/S...s/do_diag.html
Look at the 8192 Diagnistics and the two data stream descriptions. They have 727,747,170, and 749 formats pretty well detailed. Remind me again, what are we working on? The 747? Does that even have 8192? Someone chime in here?

Also look at:
http://www.isthq.com/~dan/aldl.htm
This is one of the cornerstone references as well.

Here's more:
http://www.techedge.com.au/vehicle/default.htm
This has got a few nuggets on the 160-Baud stuff, if that's where we end up going on this.

I'll take a look at my program structure a little bit and see what it would take to make the transition. Biggest thing that it will require is some beta testing on the system in question. I only have a 165 MAF to play with, so chime in.

Let me know if you find those links helpful. I'll try to be more informative next time.

1227747 TBI ecu

Not sure if it is 8192 or whatever you said. Is that some sort of speed parameter? Is it THAT important AND is your program tweakable for non-8192 ecu's? Should I continue or WAIT until you are sure I can even do this???

Thanks for the links/help.

EDIT: Went to the sites. In the GEOCITIES one, it looks like 8192 is the baud rate of the ECU's you did work on. The 7747 is 160 baud synchronous and it looks like your program was written for 8192 baud bi-directional.

Then it says:
open mode - 20 bytes
10K mode - 20 bytes
shorted mode - 20 bytes

Is that why I keep hearing about a 10k resistor in the cable?

Oh, it lists all the bytes (20), too. I assume those are the "things" that will be read by your program and the 20 byes mentioned above.... Pretty cool.

Hope we can get this to work...

EDIT2: The data streams look a lot different in the way they are used by the ALDL computer. Not going to be an easy "rewrite" as I had hoped... The geocities link has an area that explains how the two different baud "languages" work and they are drastically different. Ie, 7747 ECU constantly talks with only an "ending" byte of "1111"'s while the 8192 uses distinct bytes with, I believe, distinct bytes, too. Kinda made sense to me so it HAS to make sense to you. It's just that the program I have will surely not work... I would assume that the correct program might be an easier one than the one you made for the 8192's? I don;t even know enough to say/assume that...

EDIT 3: Just downloaded the hacks and printed most of the stuff off of the geocities link above about how the ECU's talk and are different. I'll play areound this weekend/nights and get back to you when I am a litle more educated... again. C-ya

I find it hard not to hate these stupid computers. Their just like a dog, you can beat on them and they'll come back and lick you in the face. I've got your # so I'll give you a call tomorrow.

Thanks for the mail FB
