"scan tool" for V6

I need someone to help point me down the right path. I have a car ('91 Camaro), a computer (WinXP), and a few weak brain cells. I want experiment with a "scan tool" to see the data that my ECM utilizes (and hopefully better understand how my car works) and I want to do this as cheap as possible.

I do not want to do any tuning or programming at this point.

My first problem is that I have a V6 3.1 liter MPFI and most of the info that I've been reading specifically refers to V8 TPI. What is different about my V6 setup? Are there any free programs like WinALDL that work on my V6? What ECM do I have and what mask?

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

For a '91 3.1l camaro is the ECM bit rate 160 bps or 8192 ? I'm guessing 8192 but would like some verification.

Also, I guessing my car has a 1227730 ECU and $88 mask (not $8d). Is this correct?

8192, yes & yes.

Look around for TunerPro and the appropriate ADS file.

This might help you out.

I have a 1990 Chevy Cavalier that ran on the $88 MASK. I used a 1993 Sunbird 3.1 PROM as a base for my custom chip. it is a $A1 mask, which is supported by FreeSCAN Andy Whittaker's Home Page

It would be interesting to see how close they are.

is the 91 3.1 Camaro a DIS motor or does it have the distributor?

If you could read you stock $88 I could compair it to my stock $88 cavalier code, and maybe reverse engineer a Sunbird 3.1 $A1 to work.

Ohh yeah, almost forgot, a long time ago when I first built an ALDL interface, EFI Live v4 worked on my 90 cavalier with $88 mask. There was a free file defenition for 1990Z24 that came with it, might try that.

RBob, thank you for your help and confirmation of what I have in my car. I'll look into TunerPro.

busta9876, thank you for responding. A '91 3.1 Camaro has a distributor. I'll look into FreeSCAN & EFI Live. I assume you are looking for a Camaro $88 so that you can compare it to a Cavalier $88. I'm pretty clueless right now, but if I find anything that can help you I'll try to send it your way.

The BIN AZTY is all over the net. That is the latest and greatest '90-'92 3.1l MPFI f-body automatic calibration.

a few major differences

Initial Spark Advance :

F-Body = 9.4 Deg, Cavalier = 59.8 Deg

Initial Time Out Spark Bias :

F-Body = 0.0 Deg, Cavalier = 35.2 Deg

Main Spark Adv vs MAP vs RPM

I noticed the F-Body tables have up to 11 more degrees of timing in medium load 45-75 kpa all way up rpm ranges

VE Tables are pretty close, only about 5 ve or so higher on F-body across the table.

I am in the process of trying to make $8D work on my 90 Cavalier 3.1 MPFI. The 8D has a constant Max Spark Advance 41.8 is stock for AUJP. The $88 Constants does not have the MAX Spark Advance slider, so not sure how to adjust this for my use.

Anyone know what the Initial Time Out Spark Bias does?

this is an interesting find for me as I also have a 91 v6 camaro. I am trying to learn tuning. I'm making some progress but I'm still a little lost on some things so maybe I can learn something from this thread! I've got a lot of engine mods on mine so I definitely need tuning!!

The one at this link is good:

My 85 Z28 and EPROM Project

It is the 92 Camaro AZTY down near the bottom.
