AFR Tuning with WB02
AFR Tuning with WB02
This may be a stupid question but here it goes.
I am tuning my 84 Vette and I have EBL with Ostrich and a WB02. I am straightening out my idle (thansk RBob) and so forth.... After much reading and thinking I have a basic question. While tuning my PE/AE and VE tables should I be targeting a AFR 12.7:1 as read from the WB02 or 14.7:1. I ask because at idle with everything warmed up the exhaust is stinky (rich) at 12.7:1. The exhaust is new and the Cat is as well.

This is just my $0.02 worth. I am sure others will have different thoughts-
If it is running in closed loop, tune for 14.7:1 in your part throttle areas. Use your PE tables to get you down around 12.3-12.7:1 for wide open throttle. Idle can tune for 14.7:1. I have seen even slightly leaner mixtures at idle, it will depend on what the engine likes.

Don't forget to disable CCP. Are BLMs and INT locked at 128 also?
When I did my O/L tuning I used 14.7 although I have modified that to 14.2 based on 10% ethanol here in Illinois.

There are no magic numbers.
Timing will also influence your indicated AFRs.
Again, tune for the least amount of timing consistant with max performance.
With that said:
A mild engine does well with 14.7 at idle, and light cruise.
PE uses the richer AFRs for in cylinder cooling, the hotter the inherit temps of your combo, the more fuel is needed. I've seen AFRs from 10.6, to 13.2 at PE being used successfully. For AE again depending on combo, a slight leaness to just a tad richer then Stoich can work.
