Unwanted flames from exhaust

A buddy was following me the other day and I decided to give my car a healthy dose of the go fast pedal. Upon release of the ticket magnet he said that he saw a small flame come out of one of my pipes.
The car is the 92 GTA in the sig running SAUJP timing. My wb states that i'm running 13.5 (need to richen still) at WOT.
I've read that a rich condition will cause this. I don't believe that's my situation since i'm running leaner than is generally accepted at WOT.
I've also read that timing coming in too late can cause this. Possible. I've had to drop my idle SA and lower the VE tables to combat my still surging idle.
Do I need to advance my idle SA and and try to correct my surge in a different manner?

Do you have any exhaust leaks?
Is the AIR system intact? If so, is the diverter valve connected and operating?
Fresh air leaking into the exhaust stream or being pumped in by the AIR system can cause flaming exhaust on decel.

No more exhaust leaks and the AIR system is long gone.
BTW - it flamed from both pipes. true duals.

Re: Unwanted flames from exhaust

That's just fuel from the manifold escaping unburnt when the throttle snapped shut and sucked the wall film out. The film going through + closed throttle causes an over rich condtion and doesn't burn in the chamber. When it reached some air in the exhaust (perhaps when DFCO has been on long enough to have dried out the manifold), it lights up. Nothing to worry about (unless you have cats and do this repeatedly like on a road race track).

Non-issues are always good news.
