a 165 ecm running or a 4cyl?

I happen to have a painless wiring maf tpi harness and ecm laying around and a older beater rodeo I picked up for next to nothing. that I somehow got a bug to put a small turbo on as a first try at building a turbo manifold.

I did a quick search but didn't find much about it. I was wondering if I need a memcal for a 4cyl, or if they ever even used this ecm and bin on a 4cyl.

so pretty much I'm asking can it be done? I know the cyl count is in the bin and cal-pack on 8D. is it like that is this code? and what is the code used in maf tpi cars? $32 maybe?

if its not that eazy, I have a spare 730, I guess I could repin the harness to that and run a boosted code with a 4cyl memcal. but I kinda wanna try tuning a maf setup once. since its already a maf truck and i also have a new maf off an LQ4 that I may never get around to using any place else.

'165 could be $32, $32B or $6E.

You might be able to get away with using a 4cyl MEMCAL from a '7730 style ECM, I believe the '165 uses the same style, just doesn't have a built in knock filter.

You could likely also modify the original MEMCAL, to have a proper value a lot like what is done to 6 cyl MEMCALs to use with a V8, but obviously shorting the pins wouldn't be the proper way to do it. Using the correct resistor between the correct pins would be the way to do it. I recall seeing values for each cylinder count needed at the pin from the MEMCAL, in a thread on here. I think it was a thread dedicated to Limp Home tuning.

If It were me, I'd just use the '7730 and run SD, you know $59, and it does work on 4 cyl engines.

My current ECM (165) came out of an 80s S10 blazer with a four banger. It did have a memcal, which looks exactly like an f-body one. I'll have to dig it up when I get home, but if you want I can mail it to ya - I've got no use for it.

thanks for the offer man, and i almost took you up on it. since i thought finding a memcal from a turbo 4 with a 749 would be really hard. but i hit 2 junkyards for prom's today. and i couldn't believe it. there sat a little vert turbo sunbird with a manual tranny. (i bet that was a fun car in its day) so i picked up the prom. AKDB code. i searched but haven't found anything online to double check it. but it should be right.

i also found a quad 4 with that i think was the newer 749 ecm. so i grabbed that chip too. its a ARHL, came from an 89 grand am i think.

also checking thru this cash for clunkers stuff. which if you haven't hit a yard in a while, you need to. these newer cars are in there. only thing you can't take is the motor. but things like the vortech dizzys with the cam sensor's in them. are all over the place. hell i even saw a really nice looking non turbo 300zx, the newer body style. still had crossed drilled brake rotors on it. but anyways, i say a 90 chevy truck, with a tbi big block in it. checked the ecm and it even had a hypertech chip still in it. so i picked that and the prom up. posted that up on the fullsized chevy board. see if i can pass it on to someone that can use it. i doubt anyone here can, but its a p/n 123112 and the prom is BAMY
