7730 memcal question

Hi guys, I got a 7730 out of a 6 cyl. Camaro at the salvage yard. I want to use it for a 350 TPI in my street rod. The memcal in that ecm is from a six cyl, I want to cut the chip out, desolder the pins and insert a new programmed sst chip. But how about that blueish gel part of that memcal. Is that part of the the knock sensor circuit? Is that memcal only good for a 6 cyl. ? I hope I dont need to buy another memcal. Any info appreciated. thanks.

Re: 7730 memcal question

You don't need to desolder the existing chip, just use a MEMCAL adaptor, such as the G1 from Moates.net.

The biggest issue is the other end of the MEMCAL, that is the CALPAK. There is a cyl select setting that is determined by the resistor network. Now there are ways to modify the CALPAK for proper cylinder selection. There is a thread dedicated to this in the forum. Do a search on MEMCAL modifications and it should come up.

Re: 7730 memcal question

Hi sixshooter, sorry, I searched all them posts and didnt find nothing about changing the calpak resistor network from a 6 cyl to a 8 cyl., unless I missed it somehow. I wish I can find out how to do it. If I cant I'll have to buy a new memcal. What about those 2 chips under the calpak? How are they involved? Any further help will be greatly appreciated! Please help! Thanks, JoeK18

Re: 7730 memcal question

The large white board is not the CALPAK, that is the knock filter, the "chips" under that knock filter is the CALPAK, and theres a couple pins that get shorted.

Try searching using "Memcal" or "CALPAK" and other related terms, and the thread(s) will come up.
