7148ecm or EBL Flash? Turbo car maf or no maf

Ok guys, too start my own thread and not kill sixshooters thread.

I am looking at getting a power logger for my TurboBbuick with the 7148 ECM. This has a MAF and I already modded it so I can burn my own chips. I can get the powerlogger (a logger the goes on the edge connector of the ECM), that would give me fast logging and I can get it for 225 from a guy. This would give me logging ability, but I would still have to burn chips with my auto prom. It also has SFI, from what I understand is better for mileage, but goes into batch mode after 3000RPM (anyone confirm?)

Now, RBob put a bug in my head, I could use the EBL with the port mod. This would be 350.00? for the EBL flash, and 25 for the port mod. Then I would need at least a 2bar map. And some re-pinning of the harness I suspect. so the cost is more.

But add in me getting a ls1 maf and a translator (250.00+) to keep the 7148, and loose the crappy factory MAF, this puts me in the same price range.

With the EBL I would loose wastegate control through the ECM, this is only a downside for my have different boost levels in different gears. I can control the N2O in the EBL, but I don't know if I can boost reference it, I am using it for spool-up. I am also using an alky kit, That is stand alone, unless I could tie it in . I have a WB and a carputer is going in it too so all would be able to be logged and adjusted from the touchscreen.

Soooo, the big question. What does everyone think would be better for this little turbo six? Keeping the stock ECM, and adding the translator, logger and bigger MAF? Or going with the EBL? I am more concerned with mileage with a street tune, I know SD turbo cars haul!

Thanks for any and all replies and suggestions

I would think the EBL would be better. VE learn is a big plus. Don't know if the 7148 has lean cruise or not. EBL has super customer support............

Agreed, EBL does have super customer support!! I have the EBL classic in my chevy. I can get lean cruise burned into a chip from turbo tweak, but he has custom stuff done to his chips that is out of my realm of knowledge to do on my own chips.

Side note, I just realized I would have to loose the EGR to have the EBL control the N2O, I dont have EGR in my wagon, just N2O so it slipped my mind. alot of guys do away with it, but I think it would help keep me from pinging when cruising, but it isn't totally neeed.

From an old post from Bruce

"Forgot to mention:
That at over about 2,500 RPM, there is no differnce SEFI to batch, and at WOT the that number drops to much lower.

ie the intake valve is only open 25% of the time so the second the injector PW is over 26%, the difference between the two stops.

Also, lots of GN switch to Batch from SEFI for racing. Just disabling the can sensor input to the ecm defaults to batch fire."

found here ----> https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/post...345-post6.html

That answers one question, fuel mile still in the air.

If the only two options are '7148 or EBL, I would go EBL. SFI is over-rated, and IMO doesn't gain any milage, especially once you factor in that you can tune for milage.

My '73 Datsun, that has a turbo 2.8L I6, running a '7749 w/ code59, gets much better milage than my 1998 Chevy Malibu with a stock 3100, just FWIW.

The only thing I don't like about the EBL in this case is the loss of wastegate/boost control throughthe ECM, but I'm a fan of having less extra boxes and controls on everything.

I like having less boxes too. I kinda like the MAF too, but the sides are even on that deal, 50% like MAF, the other like SD. I dunno what to do, lol.

Instead of the waste gate solenoid the RJC control is a good set up. This is the mechanical ball & spring type controller. Until the boost reaches the preset level there is no backing off of the waste gate. Works rather well for such a simple device.

Part of the key to why it works so well is the light weight check ball. This allows for a quick response.

RBob.
