TPI swap, Memcal question
TPI swap, Memcal question
Hello,
I am doing a TPI swap on three off road vehicles and have a few questions that I cannot find the answers to. These are all stock so I do not need to do any real tuning right now, just vats and emissions delete and update the MAF memcal to the 89 program so as to have a cold start delete. I have been collecting parts over the past 6 months and am about to make the actual swap but have one last roadblock that I need to complete. Instead of ordering 3 programmed chips I think I will be able to buy the equipment and make the adjustments myself.
The MAF system I think is from an 88 firebird (it was a wreck I pulled the engine out of from craigslist) it still had the cold start injector and the fuel rail part number indicated 87-88. I have the used ECM with MEMCAL/eprom from the car. The research that I have been able to do shows that I need the G1 adapter and eprom chip, programmer and software.
G1 adapter 35$ ---
EPROM chip:---- C2 SST 27SF512 Chip replacement chip 5$
BURN2 Chip programmer 85$
TunerPro RT 30$
Total to add in Vats delete, and emmissions delete to MAF system.
35 Adapter
5 Eprom
85 Programmer
30 Programming/reader software
----
$155
Am I on the right track with this? From my understanding the TunerPro software has the original .bin? files from all the TPI cars so I can use the one for/from the 89 350 fbody so it will have the cold start injector delete.
I also found the site: ftp://ftp.diy-efi.org/pub/gmecm/bin_lib/
Correct me if I am wrong but I can put the bin for the 89 fbody on from here as well if the tuner pro software doesnt have all the original bin files as I thought.
The other 2 systems I want to set up as MAP systems but I do not yet have the computers or Memcals....My research shows me that the MAP system ECM's are relatively easy to pick up on all sorts of vehicles but I cant find much info on the Memcals.
Say I pick up an ECM from a: 1993 CHEVROLET CAVALIER RS V6 3.1L 189cid GAS FI N Engine, will the Memcal work?
The MAP ecm is part #1227730 but are the memcals all the same? Almost all of the GM electronics on the TPI systems have a big interchange list with a vast majority of other cars but I am coming up empty handed as far as what is interchangeable when it comes to the Memcals.

Re: TPI swap, Memcal question
The V6 MEMCAL won't work as it comes out of the original application for you, in your application.
You have two options:
A) Buy a V8 TPI MEMCAL from GM, if there is any stock left, last I heard there wasn't. This would be broadcast code AUJP, and have proper limp home and knock filter settings for the TPI.
2) Modify the V6 MEMCAL to be set for 8 cylinders that is a matter of soldering in a jumper across two pins on the LHM NETRES chip. There is information in a couple threads in this forum about performing this modification. I don't know how well the LHM or knock filters will work in your application though.
Any reason you don't want to update the TPI system you have to Speed Density?
Since you're not really planning on doing any tuning, you're on the right track with the parts you listed.
-MEMCAL Adaptor
-EEPROM
-Programmer
-Tuning/editting software
If you wanted to do some tuning, and I'm sure once you get the equipment you'll want to, then you will also need an ALDL cable to datalog from the ECM to know what it is seeing.
You could also add in the Ostrich 2.0, to perform real time tuning when the time comes.

Re: TPI swap, Memcal question
Ok, thanks for the reply.
The reason I wanted one to be MAF was because I already have the computer w/memcal and MAF sensor for it that came with the wrecked car.
Now that you brought it up it might just be better to go with MAP just for ease of installation, plenty of extra MAP sensors available in the pick N pulls and not having to use an ESC for the knock sensor.
That brings two additional questions then if I go that route:
1.
Are the throttle bodies interchangeable? I think I read on chevythunder that the Newer MAP throttle bodies are able to be used on all years but not the other way around...Is this true or did I just misunderstand what was written? If this is true is there an adjustment or block off that can be done to make the older MAF throttle bodies usable on a MAP system?
2.
The Memcals again: Can I use the MEMCAL from my MAF and just load in a MAP bin file?
Did I understand correctly that it just needs to be from a V8?
It just needs to be for a V8 so I can use a Memcal from any year TPI 305 or 350? or are the Memcals out of the LT1's usable also? There are a ton of LT1's I have available that I can get a Memcal out of if they are.

The throttle body has no effect on MAP or MAF system. The MAP should be connected to a vacuum port of the plenum, not throttle body. OORC the MAP attached to a port nearer the rear of the plenum, might have even been T'd into the FPR tubing.

I believe the LT1s are all "flash PCMs", in that they don't have a removable PROM.
You might be able to get away with swapping the knock filter from another module onto your "MAF MEMCAL", and have V8 LHM settings that way, not sure how different the the '165 and '7730 TPI LHM settings are.

Re: TPI swap, Memcal question
ok, so the ESC is a hardware addition to the memcal and not the ECM? I thought it was added to the newer ECMs and not the memcal. So if it is on the memcal itself then the 305 memcals are not interchangeable with the 350?

Re: TPI swap, Memcal question
It's not an engine displacement change, it's a year change. The MAF based TPI systems used the '7165 ECM, the SD TPI systems used the '7730 ECM. The '7165 used an external knock filter, the '7730 ECMs use an internal knock filter that is part of the MEMCAL.
People have used 305 MEMCALs on 350s, they have even used V6 MEMCALs on V8s, with the modiication I mentioned earlier.
