Load induced by power steering

I was looking through the s_AUJP bin last night and found values for Power Steering Anticipate. A problem I've been having with my car is that at low speed or stopped (such as parking or making a U-turn), the heavy steering input from lock to lock caused my car to stall. I'm guessing it's the load from my Power Steering pump that is doing this, so I figured that adding steps to the power steering anticipate table would help, but then I wondered, how would the ECM know to anticipate that power steering is being used? Wouldn't a power steering pressure sensor be used to warn the ECM (Which F-Bodies don't have). If that's the case, what other ways could I use to prevent stalling during this driving condition? I was thinking of perhaps raising the idle from 700 to 800? Tighten my spark error tables up so it doesn't make big jumps? (Idles smooth as butter on stock AUJP spark correction tables)

Re: Load induced by power steering

The 3.1l and 5.0l TBI f-body's have a P/S switch on the high pressure line. Could retro fit the line and switch.

The ECM in for the 3.1l engines turns off the A/C compressor during high P/S loads. Such as during parking.

Not sure what the TBI cars do, unless it just add IAC steps or such. A/C compressor is not ECM controlled on the TBI f-body's.

This is the same way my 1989 L05 Caprice is setup, FWIW.

Re: Load induced by power steering

The 86 Monte SS has the switch on it. They don't look too expensive to buy and wire it up. ($35 at Autozone PS418)
i'm sure they are on others as well (pull-a-part walk around kind of part)
Would be worth a try.

Re: Load induced by power steering

I haven't had much time to mess with the car so I did not get the switch wired in yet. I did try putting a little more timing in the idle error vs spark advance table-like 2 degrees more in the 150-200 rpm error values and it worked! Now when I'm turning lock to lock, the rpms will dip but recover nicely.
