Scan info help please?

Hi guys,

New to scanning and have never burned anything apart from toast so please bear with me.

My car is a 1985 2.8 V6 MPFi Firebird, I've scanned it tonight and have had some interesting results.

Firstly when the software (both TunerPro and WinALDL) is connecting and monitoring, the tachometer readings from the rev counter on the actual car dashboard and the software dashboard are very different. i.e. when both software is reading 3000 rpm the dash is reading 5000 rpm and the difference is linear throughout the rev range. I'm thinking perhaps someone at some point has changed the clocks with V8 clocks without realising? Is this what would happen? Is there anyway to confirm which is correct?

Also TunerPro gives me two separate coolant temperature settings. I've attached a picture to help describe what I'm on about. When one says 150F the other says 70F and when the fan kicks in there is no fan request? Confused. Also to note is that the values displayed in this photo ARE just after the fan kicked in, so what on earth is going on? Thats far too low for the fan to cut in. Something else to note is that the temp gauge never reads over 100F regardless of how hot the motor is.

I also seem to have two MAT readings??!!

So this is where I'm at, so if someone could help before i detonate my motor id really appreciate it!

Looks like Celsius and Fahrenheit numbers.

Correct. ex of the values for the tach and ecm readings, if you can. If you can, take a picture of your gauge cluster. That will tell us if the gauges have been swapped, and if your tach is for a V6.

Now why didn't I think of that?! That's it thank you so much. But why is my cooling fan kicking in at 70C? Surely it should be way hotter than that before it kicks in?

ok I'll try to find a pic, but I don't know to tell the difference. I have a V8 set of gauges and they look identical to these.

Its a 1985 V6 so it has the little squares on the gauges faces.

Re: Scan info help please?

if you haven't had the car since new, I think hypertech used to sell a low temp fan turn on replacement for the high temp on the head sensor. it kinda over rode all the turning I think. 70c is right about 160f? seems about right for a 160 stat

probably not the same thing, but the 90-92 camaro dash tachs fail slowly by going higher and higher. there's a huge thread about it on here somehow about how to replace the resistors to get it back down. I did mine years ago. but I don't know if the firebirds did the same thing.

Thanks for the help but it turned out to be a dodgy coolant temp sensor. New one cured it
