How common is it for PROMs to go bad?

Hey guys...I read up on PROMs a little bit on a old post on here...really old...so I didnt comment on that one...but is it rare for a PROM to go bad...and or also...do they reproduce these...or do you just get a new ECM is what its called?

Also what is this "PROM burning" I hear of?

It's not very common for a factory prom to go bad. Over time they can flip a bit and have bad data.
You can reprogram the factory prom or Reburn the data or new data.
A error code 51 is usually a bad ecm not memcal.

Most people use moates.net burn 2 but this is a breakdown of what's involved.

Code 51 is specifically "Bad PROM" or "Bad MEMCAL".

Granted a failed ECM could cause a code 51, if the right circuits failed. But to say that a code 51 means bad ECM and not PROM is quite misleading.

You can test this by simply removing the PROM ot forget to disable checksum while emulating... and you will get a code 51 with a perfectly functioning ECM.
