Is it worth it?

I have an '83 crossfire Z with next to zero mods. Just a lightweight flywheel, and soon to come a random tech cat. My roommate claims he can burn the chips for me, but for the mods I have is it worth it to buy a new ECM and start burning chips? I don't want to kill my gas mileage, that's why I did the mods I did. thanks,
Tim

Tim,

Why would you need to buy a new ECM?

As Vader said, you SHOULDN'T need a new ECM just to burn eproms. However, since the Cross-Fire is TBI, a number CF guys have swapped to the 747 Truck TBI because it is readily available and thoroughly hacked to make eprom tuning easy.

As I understand it, the problem with the stock Cross-Fire ECM is the limited information available on it, thus making tuning difficult.

Do some searching on Cross-Fire and hopefully you can find more info on a 747 ECM Swap.

The biggest problem I see with stock ECM is use of PROM instead of EPROM. Every time you do a new burn you have to buy a new chip. The code itself is not a problem.

Slow stock computer

I was told the stock computer only does 25 calculations per second, whereas the 7747 does 250. That's why I thought I needed a new computer. If I decide to stick with my computer, and I have to get a new chip each time I burn, where is the easiest and cheapest place to get new chips? Thanks

It's more then just buying an ecm.
Your's uses edge card connectors,
so the connectors have to be replaced, which is 30 something splices.

You have your coice of the 747 which is fully commented and hac'd or the 8746. The 8746 uses a IAT which has it's points.

Trouble is the stock CFI injector set uo stinks.
Each throttle bosy has a different sized injector, and on has an accumlator and the other a fuel pressure regulator, to even to begin to get things right also means replumbing the TB's so they are in parrarel rather then series, and blocking off the accumulator regulater that's there and going to a single return style regulator.

If you want to go thru all that there are some minor gains, or they will allow you do go alot furhter then just a few bolt ons.
