software vs cables

Which software works with which cables? Or do they all interchange? Which of the free programs is the best. Free scan looks really nice but it looks like no maf. Thanks for any help.

I thought Freescan did MAF... Well, there's several out there. They all use the MAX232/233 or 2-transistor device except WinALDL which is one-way 160-baud. But since you have an 89, you probably want the 2-transistor or 232/233 interface for 8192 baud communications. All go to the serial port. Free software, either mine or one of the others. Try:

Then there's Diacom, which is a couple hundred bucks, and it uses a custom interface. Hooks to the parallel port. And there's another one, Datamaster, which people seem universally pleased with. It's parallel too, I believe.
