Dual Fans

I just ordered a dual fan assembly from a junkyard; that weak single fan isn't cooling my engine efficiently enough. Has anyone switched over to dual fans? How did you wire it all up? I don't have fuel inj. anymore, will this affect how the fans are wired in? If anyone has any information on how to do this, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Mike

cooling it off

i know this is not the exact answer you wanted but, i put a high flow Flow Kooler water pump, an aluminum radiator a 180 thermostat and wired a switch to my single electric fan, so i can turn it on as i please and the car never gets warmer than 180. going down the highway actually runs about 150. ihave to sit in the sun in traffic for a long *** time for it to even get to 180(i do have the fan on though). just fyi hope this helps somehow

Thanks for the reply. Those are good ideas and would work but I can't afford to try any (those fans were a lot of $$$). The motor in my single fan is just dying, but I didn't want to put any more money into it-I figured this was the perfect time to upgrade to duals.

Someone here has to know how to wire them in!!!!!!!!!

I have a 92 RS that came with a 305 and single fan.
The factory wiring on this was using the fan switch in the passenger side cylinder head to activate the relay near the master cylinder on the firewall which turned the fan on.
Also, if the AC was on the relay would run the fan continuously.
I ended up running two aftermarket fans through an adjustable temp switch and relay, completely independent of everything else.
Now, the fans run whenever the temp is above 175, and they shut off at 165.(the adjustable switch lets you set any turn-on
temp)
You will either have to modify the factory wiring or switch to an aftermarket fan switch like I did and wire it from scratch.
The easiest thing to do, in my opinion, is to connect both fans to the existing fan wiring for the single unit. Unfortunately, the current draw of two fans may blow the existing fuse for this circuit
and may even exceed the recommended maximum of the wires.
You can use the existing fan power wire to activate a new relay that supplies both fans with power. This way it'll be safe and it'll still come on and off at the same temps as before. Later you can put a lower temp fan switch in the stock location and they'll come on sooner.Run a large wire (AWG 8-10) from the power distribution terminal near the battery to the supply side of the relay.Installing an inline fuse would be adviseable as well.
Then run power from the relay(s) to the fans and connect the grounds.Solder as many connections as you can.
If you need more details, E-mail me and I'll send you a drawing.

Thanks for all the info so far guys, it's been really helpful. I just started the installation of the fans today (since the damn ps pump decided to break ).

I bought the assembly from tacreations and they threw in a factory relay and plug for the second fan. The relay says 2164 and is different from the relay in my car. It has 5 wires: A large orange wire (I assume it's the power wire), a red wire, a green/white wire, a gray wire, and a black/white wire. The plug has a gray and a blue wire.

Do y'all know how to wire this up using the factory relay? This is the first major thing on my car I've had to wire so far. Hopefully, it'll also be the last.

Thanks again,
Mike

Check the color of the wires on your single fan. Your stock relay for the single fan should have 5 positions.

A - Positive wire to FAN (may be large orange)
B - Brown w/ white stripe (goes into harness)
C - Grn w/ white stripe (goes into harness, ECM ground wire)
D - not used
E - To battery positive (use some fusible link wire also)

The negative wire from the fan goes straight to a good ground (use the same one as the other fan.

Create a 2nd wiring harness using the first one as your template. DO NOT try to use the same power wire from the first relay (as suggested above). It will burn up.

Wire your 2nd relay using large gauge wire for A and E. You can tap into the existing harness and "T" off the wires for B, and C. B should be a key on 12v source, and C is the Ground.

This is also a good time to hook up a manual fan switch, by again "T" into C. and then to a switch, then to a ground. By turning on the switch, you are grounding the circuit and turning on both relays. Dont worry about the colors on the New relay not matching...use the positions on the relay/plug. Picture below:
