Fan Switch.... maybe a little tricky

ok, i'm getting into the local street drag scene (Bristol, Thurs, night street fights... come by)
anyway,
I need to keep my car cooler while waiting in line, I don't want to crank it and shut it off every time the line moves, and I don't want to sit there with the ac on the whole time either, is there a way I can hook up a switch that when activated will override the relay and just cut the fan on, but when the switch is off it works like it does right now, which it does work, just not cool enough for me....

thanks guys
Cody

Yes.

I'm not sure what type of car you have, but I'll go ahead anyways as if it is TPI. The fan is controlled by a temperature switch in the passenger side cylinder head in between the #6 and #8 cylinders. There is a single wire going to this switch. All the switch does is close when it reaches a certain temperature, grounding that wire. That trips the relay and turns the fan on. So, you can bypass that temperature switch by tapping into the wire leading to it and providing an alternate path to ground. So, splice into that wire, through the toggle/rocker switch of your choice, to any ground. Turning on your new switch will then complete the circuit to ground and turn the fan on. The regular temp switch will still function because you only spliced into the wire to it (making a "Y") instead of just replacing it with a manual switch.

I've never had a TBI car, so it may be slightly different in that case. I think it is basically the same setup, but with only one fan. Look at the cooling fan and thermostat tech article too. It might help.

Depending on the year you may not have the switch in the head, mine (1985) is in the front of the intake manifold where it protrudes into the water jacket.

i have a 91 RS 305TBI
i just hooked the switch to the fan fuse and then spliced it into the hot wire on the fan itselt.... works perfectly, and since its on the fuse, it cuts off when the car cuts off, so no worries there either....

cool!

Success feels so sweet:lala:
