Why is my factory tachometer so far off?

At 1000 rpm my tach reads 2000 rpm.
At 2000 rpm it reads 3800.
At 3000 it is around 6000.
At 6000 it is about two inches past the bottom of the tach.

WTF?

How do I fix this?

Comparisons were made based on readings on my scan tool Vs. the tach.

Sounds like a bad tach in the cluster.

I have heard something about a filter that makes the needle more smooth. I have heard that it can go out.

Anyone know anything about that?

Not sure, but I don't think your car has a tach filter.

The tach filter (if equipped) is mounted to the fire wall, behind the distributor. Your '91 probably does not have a tach filter.

Damn. Do I need to replace the tach itself out of the guage cluster?
