temp gauge gone crazy

Anyone know how to test a stock temp gauge while its still in the car. My gauge started to go all over the place. Past the red, then down to where it should be then back up again etc. etc. I replaced the sending unit thinking it was the problem, no luck still does it. I called a local chevy dealer parts dept. and he said its not replaceable and the whole gauge cluster must be sent "in" to be fixed and would cost $200-$400. Is that true I don't think it is but one of you might know more than me. Any help would be great. Thanks.

The temperature gauge should read 260 F with a 55 ohm resistor connected from the temp gauge wire to ground, and it should read 100 F with a 1.3K ohm resistor connected from the temp gauge wire to ground. The resistors are available from Radio Shack. Also, the gauge should read max scale with the wire grounded, and min scale with the wire open.

What year of what car do you have. Some temerature gauges are replaceable depending on what car you have and what style of dash. My temp gauge can't be replaced independent of the rest of the gauges, but the one on my sister's IROC can be. The one for the IROC costs about $50 at the dealer.

My temperature gauge was acting up a while back and then one day I found it to be "pinned" at 260. Does this mean it is grounded somewhere? The same thing with my oil pressure gauge, it is also pinned at the top.
