I think I fried my computer!!!!

Hey guys, last night i hooked up a stray wire, to a stray sensor(i thought they went together) and it ran fine while I did it. Now it doesn't start, or even fire on any cylinders. I unpluged the sensor. I went to run a diagnostic test, and the computer doesn't do anything(turn on fan, or blink trouble codes). I checked the fuse, and thats ok. My question is, what else could it be, and if I did blow the computer, my friend has a computer from an 85 GM and was wondering if that would work in my car. I have a 1991 z28 TPI. Thanks

Nope, his computer isn't even close. Hooking stray wires together? Not a good idea. If you don't even get a check engine light with key on, engine off, and you do have power and ground to the ECM, than you need to get one.

What sensor did you connect the wire to? Where does the wire come from & what color is it?

It was a single red whire that ended just over my passenger side wheel well. The sensor whent into a water passage on the passanger side cylinder head. They where the only two things on that side, so i thought i would connect them.. O ya one more thing, the wire melted and grounded out against my header... that could of done somthing. Does anybody know if a computer from an 85 GM will work?

The red wire with a covered female stake on type connector is the fuel pump test connector. The sensor, on the passenger side cylinder head, between cyls 6 & 8, is the secondary fan switch - since you have a 1LE, A/C in not installed, and probably only a single electric cooling fan is used, in which case the sensor should not be connected to anything.

If the wire insulation melted & the red wire was grounded, you probably blew the 20 ampere in line ECM / fuel pump fuse, near the battery, under the hood - you probably checked only the 10 ampere ECM fuse in the fuse panel, under the dash, correct?

If the ECM is toasted, an '85 ECM will not work. You would need an ECM from a '90 - '92 VIN 8 (TPI 350), VIN F (TPI 305), or VIN T (PFI 3.1L V6).......or purchase a new ECM.

Add to Tim's post of other GM cars that came with the 1227730 ECM:

1) 88-94 3.1 V6 PFI "T" LH0 in ALL GM cars except W-Bodies
2) 87-89 2.8 V6 PFT "W" LB6 in ALL GM cars except W-Bodies

And of course all TPI 5.0 and 5.7 1990-1992 F-body cars.

You can confirm the engine VIN Code by looking at the 8th digit and the Body VIN code by looking at the 4th digit.

2.8 and 3.1 V6 in late 80s - early 90s FWD GM cars are a dime a dozen in the wrecking yards. Just make sure you switch the PROM, as that is the difference from car to car.
