WTF? Electric fan troubles...

I have a 305 TBI motor in my '89 Firebird. I've been having troubles with the electric fan coming on and off at the wrong times.

Sometimes, when I turn the ignition to the "on" position (without starting the car), the fan will kick on.

Yesterday, I had taken my car out for a drive, and when I turned the car off, the darn electric fan was still running! Even when the car was completetly turned off with the key out of the ignition. I had to put the key back into the ignition and turn it to the "on" position, and the fan turned off.

Any ideas? Seems like some type of wire may be grounded or something.

Sounds like a sticking fan control relay. Next time it happens tap the top of the relay with the handle of a screwdriver or some such persuasion device. Don't forget, if you have AC the fan will also be controlled by AC head pressure and will run at times it normally would not.

Sounds like the infamous fan control switch problem our cars seem to have. You can go get it replaced at your mechanic or buy one from JET Chips... I think the one from JET would work well in conjunction with a low-temp thermostat.

This is a stupid question, but where is the fan control relay located on my car?

Usually located down from radiator cap, it is a slightly oval shaped plastic encapsulated relay.
