ok im trying to advance my timing,but my timing tab is rusted over and i dont know where any of the numbers are.is there anyone that can help me?

 

yeah, you have a bunch of peaks and valleys in the plate... the really wide valley is btdc 0. going towards the drivers side is going retarded while towards the passenger's side is advancing. the peaks are in increments of 4.
I have my timing set to 3 degrees btdc (advanced)... that is, it's just near the peak to the passenger's side.

btw, you'll know if it's retarding or not... it starts to backfire and generally hate you.... meanwhile you have to advance it alot to know that it doesn't like it (pinging noises happen when accelerating)

Hit it with some WD-40. Use a toothbrush to clean off the rust. Use some gas or alcohol to remove the WD and then use a piece of chalk and fill the stamped indicators. Gently use an acid brush to dust off the residue and you will have a great indicator under a timing light.
