Speedo part II....CRAP!

Well I figured out what's wrong with my speedometer. Above the driver's side rear wheel well, there's a hole forming in the rubber coating on the inside of the wheel well. Right on the spot is a wire, that broke. It's a really thin wire, and when I handled it, another small piece broke off, it seems really brittle. I assume this is probably what connects to the speedometer from the rear wheels. They're not going to connect, so is there a way to bridge them if I could do it without them breaking, or does it need to be rewired? Rewiring it is going to be a bitch isn't it? I need to get this fixed ASAP because my speedometer, odometer, and tripometer are all currently non-functional. How should I go about doing this?

if it was my car, id just rewire it...

be my luck, id get them bridged, and it would snap on another part, might as well do it right the first time and not have to worry bout it anymore and just rewire it
heh

jus my 2 cents

Wiring and electronics and such is not something I have any experience doing. I hooked up my stereo equipment, but that's about it. How difficult and/or expensive would it be to rewire? Also, if it needs to be rewired anyway, would it make sense to get a 140 mph speedo? I was content with the 85, but if it needs to be rewired anyway the only real additional cost would be the guage itself right?

This is a Camaro? Shouldn't an 87 have a mechanical speedo? and shouldn't all years measure speed at the output shaft of the transmission, not the rear wheels?

Yeah man, you are way off base. There is nothing from the rear that deals w/ the speedo. My '87 T/A has an electric VSS in the tranny, but you may still have the speedo cable. Either way, it comes from the tailhousing of the tranny, NOT the rear wheels.

Huh, ok. I just thought the broken wire probably had to do with it. So if the speedometer, tripometer, and odometer are completely dead, what is probably the problem then? Could it just be a loose connection of some sort?

i have the same problem it is the speedo gear in the tranny has probably moved like mine and it is loose in the tranny. i had my speedo cable replaced and that wasn't it and the shop said it was the gear in the tranny. also i get a code 34 i think and it is a VSS sensor. it is just dropping the tranny and getting it fixed. that is just my information
