Wiring sizes...question about the labeling system?!

Can someone please enlighten me about how wiring sizes are organized. I used "1 awg" welding wire for my battery cable. It seems to not be enough, so I ordered the biggest cable summit had. It reads 1/0 awg on it. Which is bigger or are these the same? It is hard to tell visually... Thanks for your help.

Are both wires braided? Also, how did you determine that the first wire was not adequate?

Yes, they're both braided, "floppy" wires. I have approx 27 feet span of this stuff, that's why it's probably not working so hot. How did I determine...well, about 5 seconds worth of cranking 3 times in a row will drain the battery. My mini starter came with a length/guage table. It says to use zero guage cable when using 25-30ft length. I was unable to find something this big so I ended up with this 1/0.

1/0 is actually zero gauge.. as in, one zero.. 4/0 is 0000 gauge... etc.. im not sure why the battery gauge would make a difference in draining your battery though...
