Another Speedo Question

The speedometer and odometer in my car stopped working. I thought that maybe my cable was broken, so I purchased a new one. When I removed my guage cluster, I turned the end of the speedometer cable, and it moved the speedometer. So, it isn't broken. I have cruise control on my car, so I was wondering maybe that is no good. I was planning on removing the cruise control anyway, but does anyone have any ideas of the problem or what needs to be replaced?

Do you mean that you turned the speedometer cable from the transmission end, making the speedometer needle move?

Did you remove the cable and check for damage?

Confirm that, with the cable fully inserted in its sheath connected to the transmission, that it does not rotate when twisted from the speedometer end, because it's being held stationary by the speedometer gear in the transmission.

Check the speedometer gear and ensure that the teeth are good (I think it's plastic).

If you have cruise control, you have 2 speedometer cables, one from the tranmission to the cruise control unit, and one from there to the speedo. Which one did you check?

I checked the cable going from the cluster to the cruise control unit. I had it connected to the speedometer and turned the other end of the cable, and the speedometer did infact move.

So have you determined if the speedometer cable is broken?

If you've confirmed it's good, then check the gear drive for the cable.
