duh. amplifies the power source for the spark. no offense on the duh. mutiple strands of wire are coiled up like a spring very fine wire. this boosts the power to send to the distributor to send to the spark plugs. better throttle response starting etc. not necesarily hp but just a good mod to have under your belt.

Agreed. The coil amplifies the spark energy to jump the gap on your plugs. Your stock HEI external coil is in the neighborhood of 35,000 V, and the MSD blaster 2 has 45,000 V IIRC. However, Voltage is very relative, especially in terms of spark energy. You can get Accel coils that have 42 KV but deliver 50% more spark energy. But on my setup I have found that the Accel supercoil P/N 140008 delivers possibly too much spark energy and therefore has caused a problem with my distributor caps and rotors fouling up rather quickly. I believe it possibly to be causing too much resistance.
