For anyone with and s-10 (re wipers)

In My 98 s-10 My wipers only work some of the time. I know this doesnt say much but whats a good way to determin if the problem is the swith or the motor or a connection?

Bad news bro. Its the computer. S-10's have a seperate ECU that controls the wipers and it always goes bad. To get it fixed it costed me about $150.

Maybe you might not have the same problem I had, but here's what my S10 would do. First off, when I did the 'one wipe' thing (pull 4ward instead of turning it back) sometimes it would either not work at all, or sometimes it would do 2-4 wipes and then stop 1/2 way in the middle of the windshield and block my view!! When I actually went to use the timed wiper features (turning it back towards the cluster) all the timings were way whacked out and sometimes it would stop 1/2 way up and block my view again.

I checked everything I could think of ... finally gave up and took it to the dealer. They replaced the wiper ECU and its worked fine since then.

Did you recently swap in any aftermarket lights or anything? All my lights (h4 fronts, clear sides, clear 3rd brake, clear zr1's) were considered 'safe' by the manufacturer but thats the only change I made be4 the wipers went whacked out. And oddly enough when the dealer replaced the ECU, everything worked fine and I've had no problems for 2 years with all the same lights installed. Really weird stuff!!!

I have fixed a bunch of them. There is a PC board mounted inside the wiper unit. Remove the motor assembly(it's easier to get the board out) and take off the cover screws for the board. It's got a tacky gasket which you will have to clean off. Remove the PC board GENTLY- it will pry off the motor plug. Closely inspect the PC board at the place where the connector from the cars harness connects to it. You will see hairline cracks around the solder joints. Resolder the connections at the PC board with 60/40 electronic solder. Reinstall the module and make a gasket with RTV for the cover. You will fix 90% of the problems with these motors doing this and save a bucket of money. I fix them for a local garage from time to time, have not had one fail yet. The PC board has a reddish water repellent grease applied to it. Don't clean it off, work around it.
