only 110 mph?

being a young person and feeling the need to go down to the beach i try to get there as fast as i can....but for some reason when i hit 110 mph. the car automatically slows me down and wont let me go any faster...is it a chip or something?

its a 92 v-6 3.1l 191

If the car only goes a 110 then DUH!! Actually this sounds like what is known as the speed limiter in TBI equipped F-bodies. Mine had this problem too.

Going to this tech article "Overcoming the speed limiter in TBI equipped F-bodies" https://www.thirdgen.org/newdesign/tech/unlimited.shtml will guide you through on how to turn this stupid feature off.

I hope this helps ya out. I'm 19 and live in Virginia Beach, VA and I'm always flying down 264 to the beach.

Personally I don't drive that fast and given that my speedometer only goes up to 85 I would tend to stay within that limit just to know how fast I'm going... But I do like to drive fast as we all do. Anyhow, I would guess that the top speed in a '91 V6 is around 120 Mph, so whatever you do to the speed limiter... you probably won't get that much more out of it... I would swap out for a 305 (later model) or 350 If I wanted to go more than 130... Well, good luck with whatever you decide to do...

The V6 actually uses the same ECM as the TPI VIN F 305 and VIN 8 350 motors for '90 - '92 & the speed limiter is set in the PROM & must be disabled there.

I have an 88 Firebird, 2.8L V6, 5speed manual transmission.
If i put a toggle on/off switch on this VSS input wire, will that
do anything for me?

Never tried it, so I don't know how the engine would run without the VSS input, but I'd guess that it should work OK. The speed limiter will not functin with the VSS input disconnected. Disconnecting the VSS input to the ECM will cause the Service Engine Soon (or Check Engine) light to illuminate, and a VSS code will be stored in the ECM RAM. The speedometer will continue to work with an '88 setup since it uses a mechanical speedo - unlike the case of the '90 - '92, which uses an electronic speedo.

what i'm asking is:

What does this "Speed Limiter" do? does it only stop automatic
transmissions from going past 115mph, or does it also keep
manual tranny cars from going past 115?
I don't want to start messing with my ECM's inputs if putting a
toggle switch on the VSS input won't even do anything. If my car
will blow past 115 with the vss input as-is, what's the point?

.

That's probably the most expensive solution to his problem lol

He could always buy a Diablo SV and get even closer to 200 mph... lol

The speed limiter cuts off the fuel supply when the limit set in the PROM is reached, and is transmission independent. It is a function of the OEM tire speed rating. With OEM Z rated tires, there is no speed limiter - well, it's actually set to its max - 256 mph.

The same would apply, except that the speedometer would not function if the VSS were disconnected.

why i was asking about transmissions is, my Haynes repair
manual says the VSS input to the ECM is "Auto Only"
with lines pointing right at the VSS input wire...
