Need some help with coolant fans.
Need some help with coolant fans.
I will be going to the track this weekend.
The car takes forever to cool off between passes.
I know I need a different stat and an adjustable fan relay. However I lack the cash to do that this week.
My question is: Does anyone know how to hook up a simple switch that I can turn the fans on manually with?
I need the fans on without the engine running while I am waiting to run again.

Yesterday, i was toying around with an idea like that.. I took my secondary fan OUT of the car, and hooked + and - straight from the battery to it.. it spun like a madman!
I don't see why you couldn't do this.. hook one terminal straight to +, the other terminal to a switch, then the switch to ground.
Probably just put the switch under the hood for easy wiring..
Hmm.. Any smart ppl: Anything wrong with this idea? Is there too much drain or anything?
Hmm.. BTW, this won't work with the engine off unless you have an electric water pump.

If your water pump isn't circulating water through the engine and radiator, then the fan is only cooling the water that's sitting in the radiator. Also, the fan will blow out all the hot underhood air. But this is only going to drop your temp a few degrees unless you have your coolant circulating through the engine. To do this without running the engine, you'll need an electric water pump. But I don't know how long these pumps will last on regular daily drivers, since the electric motor is constantly running.
Here is what I did.
You have a temp sensor that when the coolent reaches a specific degree it turns the fans on.It will have a one wire hook up.That wire is a ground for the fan relay.Get a toggle switch and some wire.16 gauge wire should do the trick.Splice into the ground wire of the sensor and hook it up to the switch. Then the other terminal on the switch will go to a ground.
When you want the fan to come on just throw the switch. But it will only work with the key on.
I can send you a diagram of this if you are interested.Email me.

Damn, too bad this car isn't a four cylinder.
