1985 Firebird Guages
1985 Firebird Guages
I have a '85 Firebird v6 5spd with only spedo and fuel guages, and dummy lights for everything else. I have some other guages I want to put in also, but there is something holding the cluster back from removal, behind the spedometer. It will only come out an inch or two, how can I release what is holding it in and re connect it after? Also will I have the wire coming up to the dash to connect to the sender input on the oil and temp guages? the fuel one will already be there and volt one will be easy to get. I am just concerned that my car may not have the oil and temperature senders?
Thanks for the help!

You've got to disconnect the speedo cable from the back side of.... ? yep,, the speedometer
There should be a hard to reach tab you have to push up or pull down (forget direction) that 'unlocks' the able from the speedo. No easy task if you've got clumbsy hands.

Okay thanks I kinda thought it was something like that, i was just reading somewhere that there was another part of the spedo cable to disconnect by the brake booster or something?
if its just behind the spedo guage tho thats okay
but does anyone know if my car should have a oil pressure and temperature sender wires running to the dash already?

You can't pull the cluster out because the speedo cable is attached. There isn't any slack in the line. You're going to have to take the 'hush' panel (covers all the wires under the dash by the pedals) off and reach up & under the dash behind the gauges to disc the cable. This is where nimble hands come into play, it's not that far up, but there alot of crap in the way which make it sort of rough to reach up there (for me anyways).
