Sterio Short
Stereo Short
I've got a 90' RS with a Pioneer KEH-P7200 tape deck w/ 12 disc cd changer package. I've had it for 5 years. In the first year the display went out and I could no longer see anything on it, but it still worked fine for everything else (radio, tape, and cd's)
Now, in the past year, it's gone haywire. It jumps to random stations resetting all presets and going back down to the lowest fm station (88.1 I think), the cd changer turns off by itself, and the tape flips sides every once in a while. Still no display also.
I know it's not the head unit, and it sounds like a short. I had my first stereo installed when I got the car by a shop... the asses chopped off the wires right near the base where the plastic hose is and crimped everything. When I upgraded I could no longer use a harness and the factory wires have very little room.
Anyway, anyone know how to fix this. Is there a way to replace the wires all the way at the root (I'm guessing near the firewall somewhere) so I can use a factory harness?
P.S.
I don't want to replace the head unit because I will lose the 12 disc changer because they are a package deal.
Thanks,
Jm

It IS the radio man. If the display is out then how do you know it’s going to the lowest station? That sounds like it’s just the display backlights and not the display, no big thing for a shop to fix. The tape player switching sides is probably the belt in the mechanism, no big thing for a shop it fix. For the power problem try to if wiggling the harness at the back of the radio and see if it makes it cut in/out. That would be a solder connection at the harness, vary common and no big thing for a shop to fix. If may guesses are right, and these are vary common problems, then a honest shop should be able to fix all three for under $120.00.
BTW if you buy another Pioneer it should still control the CD changer.
Now the disclaimer, without seeing and tested your radio these are all guesses, but vary good ones. They are all the most common thing that causes the problems listed.
