Something shorting

I have recently picked up an 82 Z28 and something is killing the battery. I think it may be the "you left your key in the ignition " warning (it warns when the key is not in the igniton). Please Help.

if that chime goes all the time
find the fuse and pull it. then check to see if the battery still has a draw.
if it still does. start pulling fuses till the draw disapears
then trouble shoot that circuit

When you put the key in the ignition it completes a grounding circuit that activates the "key warning". So, if yours does it without the key in the switch then you have a grounding condition either in the ignition switch itself or somewhere in the warning circuit. Most likely in an 82 the metal fragments from the key wearing down after years of in and out have grounded the ignition switch. I would pull the ignition switch and clean or replace.

Thanks for the help. Hooked up fully charged battery and listened. this led me to a relay that was buzzing... took the cover off of it and found the coil was starting to break down and the contacts had burnt together. Removed relay and ordered new one. My Z is now ready to get back on road.
