TPS voltage

I tried to check my TPS voltage, I used the blue wire and the ground, with the key off, and I got .52 ohms. Everyone says if I move the throttle it should go up to 4.5 at WOT, but mine goes down pretty fast to 0.0 or just above that at WOT. Am I checking it correctly??? Will I be able to adjust my sensor or should I buy a new one??? I also heard that if the carb bolts are too tight it will make the tps go bad, and each new one will go bad, because the air horn could be bent, and I am notorious for over-tightening bolts. I'm thinking about just buying a new carb, but I'd like to be able to fix this, so any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

It's volts, not ohms. With the key on probe the center wire of the TPS, that's the wiper and set it to the desired voltage typically about .55 volts or so. You can use the intake plenum or any good chassis connection for the ground side of the voltmeter. I use a paper clip and gently slide it in to the center wire of the connector being careful not to damage the rubber insulator. you adjust it by loosening the mounting screws to get the desired reading. Always check specs for you particular application. According to Chilton if the voltage is below .7 volts adjustment is really not required as the ECM automatically zeros itself at voltages below .7.

Thanks for the help, but I think my TPS is a little harder to get to, since its in the carb and all, but I'll test it like you said and let you know what I find. Sky

OK, I just checked it and I got 4.75v at idle, then I start to move the throttle and it drops to around 1.5v, then it climbs steadily up to 4.5v or so at WOT. So whats the verdict?

Sounds like you have a bad spot on the TPS. If the voltage is bouncing around and you have good connections to it you might consider replacing it. Yeah I realize it's different from a TPS, me thinks it's under a plug of some sort. To set it first set curb idle, then with engine off and key on set it to .4 volts. Replace the plug or locktite the adjustment after it's made.
